World Day of Migrants and Refugees

Celebration of the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees

in Greenacres Walkerville

“God walks with His people” was the theme chosen by Pope Francis for the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR), which was celebrated on Sunday, 29 September 2024.

The Message addressed the itinerant dimension of the Church with a particular focus on our migrant brothers and sisters, a contemporary icon of the journeying Church. It is a path to be undertaken in a synodal way, overcoming all threats and obstacles, in order to reach our true homeland together.

The parishioners of St Martin’s and St Monica’s, Greenacres Walkerville (Adelaide), took Pope Francis's message to heart and reflecting on the multi-cultural character of their parish community, marked the day with a special celebration of the Eucharist where all were welcomed.

As many as 25 countries were represented at the Mass. Flags from the many nationalities were brought forward during the offertory procession and placed at the foot of the altar. Liturgy readings, prayers and songs were presented in different languages with the English translation on the overhead screen. Many of those who attended wore their national dress.

A gathering followed the Mass in the parish hall where people could share experiences and partake in many delicacies from different countries. Some found new friendships. The occasion was graced by the presence of Sr Vilana Laluan who was visiting us from the Philippines and Sr Rita Ruzzene.  Both are Provincial Councillors of the PI-AU-SA-TA Province.

We continue to pray in the words of Pope Francis: “Inspire us, Lord, as nations, communities and individuals, to see that those who come to our shores are our brothers and sisters. May we share with them the blessings we have received from your hand, and recognize that together, as one human family, we are all migrants, journeying in hope to you, our true home, where every tear will be wiped away, where we will be at peace and safe in your embrace.”
